Instead of stopping overnight in the Dades Valley, you’ll push straight through to Merzouga on Day 1, spend both nights in the desert, and dedicate Day 2 entirely to exploring it — visiting a nomadic Berber family, hearing Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, and riding camels to a luxury desert camp at sunset.

DAY 1: MARRAKECH → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH → MERZOUGA DESERT

Your driver picks you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the morning. The road heads south, climbing the High Atlas Mountains with photo stops at the finest viewpoints along the way.

Your first major stop is the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified village that has appeared in many internationally famous productions. You’ll have time to take in the kasbah from its panoramic viewpoint before lunch at a restaurant along the route.

The drive then continues east through increasingly arid landscapes until you arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon. You’ll check in to a charming riad at the edge of the dunes, where dinner and your first desert night are waiting.

DAY 2: FULL DAY EXPLORING THE MERZOUGA DESERT

Wake up early for a glorious sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes — visible straight from your riad. After breakfast, a 4×4 SUV takes you into the desert to meet a nomadic Berber family living beyond the dunes. Your guide will share insights into their traditions and daily life. Along the way, you’ll visit the hidden village of Mefis, stop in the village of Khamlia to hear the rhythms of traditional Gnawa music, and — if the water is full — catch a glimpse of the Lake of Birds.

After lunch, you’ll return to the riad for a few hours of downtime — perfect for a swim or a rest — before saddling up for an afternoon camel ride deep into the dunes. You’ll pause on a high ridge for sunset and try sandboarding on the steeper slopes. As night falls, you’ll arrive at a luxury desert camp for a Moroccan dinner, drumming around the campfire, and an unforgettable night beneath the stars.

DAY 3: MERZOUGA DESERT → AGDEZ → MARRAKECH

After breakfast at your riad, the long drive back to Marrakech begins. Today’s route traces the Draa Valley — Morocco’s longest valley, green with palm trees for much of its length. You’ll stop in Agdez for a panoramic view of the valley before continuing on to Ouarzazate for lunch.

The road then climbs back into the High Atlas Mountains, delivering you to Marrakech in the evening. Your driver will drop you off at your accommodation.
