4 DAY MERZOUGA DESERT TOUR FROM ERRACHIDIA TO MARRAKECH

PRIVATE TOUR — 3 DAYS MERZOUGA DESERT TOUR FROM ERRACHIDIA TO MARRAKECH

OVERVIEW

This 4 day tour is the comfortable version of the Errachidia-to-Marrakech route. Instead of squeezing the whole westbound drive into a single nine-hour day, it splits the journey with an overnight in the Dades Valley — adding the Todra Gorge, the Rose Valley at Kelaa M’Gouna, and the palm oasis of Skoura to the itinerary. Days 1 and 2 remain the same: a quick transfer from Errachidia airport to Merzouga, followed by a full day exploring the Erg Chebbi region.

If the straight 3 day crossing feels rushed, this is the better option.

Every itinerary is fully customisable to suit your preferences and pace.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL AT ERRACHIDIA → MERZOUGA

Your tour begins with a pick-up at Errachidia airport (ERH) or your hotel in town. From there it’s a direct drive south through the Ziz Valley to Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes — around two hours of straightforward road. Dinner and overnight in Merzouga.

A note on flights: Ryanair operates domestic flights from Marrakech three days a week (morning or early afternoon arrivals), and Royal Air Maroc flies daily from Casablanca (arriving late at night). The Day 1 timing can be adjusted around your arrival.

Approximate driving distance/time: 120 km / 2 hours

DAY 2: FULL DAY IN THE MERZOUGA DESERT

After breakfast, the day is dedicated to exploring the Erg Chebbi region. A 4×4 takes you off-road to the old galena mines (galena was once used to make kohl), then on to a nomadic family at the edge of the dunes for tea in a traditional Berber tent.

Next comes Khamlia, a small village famous for its Gnawa music — the tradition traces back to Sub-Saharan communities from Mali, Sudan, and Niger who settled here generations ago. You’ll hear live music and dance performances before a free lunch at a local restaurant.

The afternoon includes a drive through a palm grove and a stop at Merzouga’s seasonal lake (known locally as the “flamingo lake” when water levels attract them). In the late afternoon, you’ll switch to camels for the ride across the dunes to your luxury camp, pausing on a high ridge for sunset. Dinner at the camp is followed by drumming around the campfire under a full night sky.

Approximate driving distance/time: around 60 km of 4×4 touring

DAY 3: MERZOUGA → RISSANI → ERFOUD → TODRA GORGE → DADES VALLEY

After breakfast, you’ll return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4 to start the westbound drive. The first stops are Rissani (for the traditional souk if it’s a Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday) and Erfoud, where a fossil workshop shows off the region’s geology.

The route continues through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad to reach the Todra Gorge, where the Todra River has carved a dramatic canyon through the mountains — its high red cliffs are a favourite spot for rock climbers. There’s time to walk beneath the cliffs before lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, the drive continues through Boumalne Dades into the Dades Valley, with stops at the famous “monkey fingers” rock formations and a panoramic viewpoint over the valley. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in the Dades.

Approximate driving distance/time: around 310 km / 5 hours (plus stops)

DAY 4: DADES VALLEY → KELAA M’GOUNA → SKOURA → OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → MARRAKECH

After breakfast, the drive heads west to Kelaa M’Gouna, home to the famous Rose Valley. The region holds an annual Rose Festival in May, and year-round you’ll find local products — rose water, rose oil, and cosmetics — made from the harvest.

The route continues through the palm oasis of Skoura, once a key caravan stop between the Mediterranean and Sub-Saharan Africa. You’ll then reach Ouarzazate — the “Gateway to the Desert” — with time to visit the Atlas Studios (Morocco’s largest film studio) or simply photograph them from outside.

The final highlight is the UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village that has served as a backdrop for many internationally famous productions. After lunch, the drive climbs the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass before descending into Marrakech, where you’ll be dropped off at your accommodation or the airport. The tour typically concludes between 5 and 7 p.m. End of the tour.

Approximate driving distance/time: around 360 km / 5 hours 30 minutes (plus stops)
