Traveling Sahara

Four days, one private journey, one unforgettable night in the dunes

From the medina of Marrakech to the highest dunes of Erg Chebbi, the Atlas Elite Desert Experience is our signature private journey across southern Morocco. Cross the High Atlas mountains, sleep in a desert camp under more stars than you have ever seen, and return changed. Every detail is private, tailored, and looked after by your dedicated driver-guide and local team.

What Makes This Different

The Sahara is one of those rare landscapes that lives up to its reputation. Erg Chebbi rises 250 metres of pure sand against an enormous sky, and the silence at night is unlike anything in ordinary life. Our four-day private experience is designed slowly: the right amount of driving, the right amount of stopping, dinner with a Berber family, a long night around the fire, sunrise from a dune ridge.

You travel with one driver-guide for the full journey — a local expert who knows where to stop, who to introduce you to, and how to read the desert. Your camp is private. Your pace is yours. The experience is built around you, not a coach group.

The Four-Day Journey

Day One

Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate

Cross the Tizi-n-Tichka pass at 2,260 metres through the High Atlas mountains. Argan oil cooperative stop, Berber village photography. Lunch at Aït Ben Haddou — UNESCO World Heritage kasbah and the film location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Continue to Ouarzazate for the night in a comfortable riad.

Day Two

Ouarzazate → Skoura → Dades → Todra Gorge

Drive through the palm oasis of Skoura, then into the Valley of Roses and the Dades Valley with its sculpted canyon walls. Walk through the spectacular Todra Gorge — limestone walls rising 300 metres above a cool river. Overnight in a riad at the foot of the gorge.

Day Three

Todra → Erfoud → Erg Chebbi → Camel Trek → Camp

Cross the desert plateau via Erfoud and the date-palm oases of the Tafilalet. Late afternoon, meet your camels at the edge of Erg Chebbi and ride into the dunes, arriving at your private camp in time for sunset. Berber dinner around the fire, mint tea, live drumming, a sky alive with stars.

Day Four

Sunrise → Khamlia → Return

Wake before dawn and climb a nearby ridge for sunrise over the Sahara. Camel ride back to Merzouga for a hot breakfast. Visit Khamlia village to hear the unforgettable Gnawa music tradition. Return drive via Tinghir, Ouarzazate and the High Atlas, with arrival in Marrakech in the early evening.

Desert Experience FAQ

When is the best time of year for the Sahara?

October to April is ideal — cool nights, warm sunny days, and the most beautiful light. May to September is hotter but the desert is quieter and night skies are spectacular. We operate year-round.

How cold does it get at night in the desert?

In winter (December to February), nights can drop to near freezing — bring a warm layer. Camp blankets are heavy and there is always a fire. From March onwards, nights are mild to cool.

Is the camel ride difficult?

No. The ride is short (around 45 minutes) at a slow walking pace. Children, elderly travellers, and complete beginners all manage easily. A 4×4 transfer to camp is available if you prefer not to ride.

What does Book Now & Pay Later mean?

You secure your dates with a small 30% deposit. The remaining balance is paid in cash on arrival in Morocco (euros, dollars, dirhams). Full card payment is available with a 5% transaction fee. Free cancellation up to 30 days before departure.

Can the itinerary be modified?

Yes — this is a private journey. Add a day in the High Atlas, swap a hotel, slow the pace, extend in the desert. Tell us what you would like and we will redesign the route around you at no extra cost.
