Skoura Palm Grove Morocco: The Desert Oasis Between Ouarzazate and the Sahara

FES TO MARRAKECH 2 DAYS DESERT TOUR VIA MERZOUGA

The Skoura palm grove is one of Morocco’s most beautiful and most overlooked desert oases — a dense corridor of date palms, almond trees, and traditional kasbah architecture located just 44 kilometres east of Ouarzazate along the route to Merzouga. For travellers on desert tours who are accustomed to the High Atlas scenery on one side and the open desert on the other, the sudden emergence of the Skoura palm forest — dense green vegetation rising from the pre-Saharan steppe — is a genuinely surprising and beautiful transition.

The Amridil Kasbah: Skoura’s Architectural Centrepiece

The Amridil Kasbah, which appears on the back of Morocco’s 50-dirham note, is among the finest surviving examples of traditional Moroccan earthen kasbah architecture. The tower house — a four-storey square-plan structure with decorative geometric patterns in the upper facade sections — has been inhabited by the same Berber family for over 300 years and has recently been carefully restored while maintaining its inhabited character. The kasbah’s situation within the palm grove, reflected in the irrigation channels surrounding it, makes it one of the most photographically satisfying buildings in southern Morocco.

Walking the Skoura Palm Grove

The palm grove is best experienced on foot through the network of irrigation channels (khettara) that distribute water from the Amerhidil River throughout the oasis. A guided walk of 60 to 90 minutes visits the principal kasbahs — Dar Ait Soss, the Ben Moro Kasbah, and the Amridil — while explaining the traditional water management systems that have sustained this oasis for centuries. The underground irrigation tunnels, which run for kilometres beneath the desert floor delivering water from mountain sources to the oasis, represent an extraordinary feat of pre-industrial hydraulic engineering.
